This is one of the diseases that are caused because of the dysfunction in the carrying of neurological signals from the brain to the spinal cord.

The word Peripheral means beyond the brain and spinal cord, the word neuro means related to the nerves and nervous system of the body.

Peripheral Neuropathy & Treatment Options

So, according to the nomenclature of the disease, it relates to the dysfunction of the nerves that conduct the signals from the brain and to the spinal cord from the rest of the body.

Peripheral Neuropathy

The Peripheral nervous system is responsible for connecting the brain as well as the spinal cord to the internal organs, muscles via an intricate network of nerves. The nervous system of the body is very delicate and carries electrical and neural impulses that allow the different parts of the body to function.

The Peripheral nervous system comes out of the spinal cord and reaches out to different parts of the body. Any damage to the peripheral nerves can lead to loss of motor function in the organs.

To simplify, the brain is responsible for making the body respond to certain stimuli, if any part of the peripheral nervous system gets damaged, electrical signals will not be able to reach all places.

This will impair the muscles and slowly that part of the body will turn dormant and the communication between the brain and the other parts of the body is hindered. This may cause the limbs and muscles to lose sensation and also cause severe pain in those areas.

Types of Peripheral Neuropathy

There are different types of Peripheral Neuropathy and they have been mentioned down under. There can be different causes of Peripheral Neuropathy and they happen due to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome which can be caused by frequent movements of the wrist and hands. Nerve compression caused by improper movement of the limbs and hands can lead to chronic nerve injury. This kind of severe neurological damage can be caused to people who are over the age of 55. Almost three to four percent of the people in the age group above 50 can be affected by such conditions.

When a single nerve is damaged it is called mononeuropathy. Compression of one nerve for a longer period of time can cause such a condition. This can be caused to patients who have been laid in one position for a longer period of time. For example, to people who are on complete bed rest or are sitting in a wheelchair because of some condition.

Another syndrome is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is another type of mononeuropathy. This is caused by overuse strain injury because the nerve of the wrist is compressed. People who do a lot of wrist movements are subjected to such a syndrome. This can happen to people who work for longer hours in the factories and also to the ones who do a lot of typing work on computer keyboards. There can be different indications of nerve damage such as numbness, tingling sensation, and pain in the fingers of the hand.

Some of the other mononeuropathies are Ulnar nerve palsy when the nerve which passes close to the elbow is damaged, Radial Nerve Palsy where the nerve is close to the radial bone of the hand is damaged.

What causes such neural damage?

Peripheral neuropathy can be caused due to several factors such as Diabetes, Several Rare Inherited diseases. This neural damage can also be seen in people who are alcohol addicts and have vitamin deficiencies in their bodies due to poor nutrition.

Treatment

 Peripheral Neuropathy-Treatment

We have talked enough about the disease, now we must focus on how to cure such severe neurological damages. Once the disease is diagnosed by a certified medical practitioner, treatment for the disease needs to start right away. There are chances of complete restoration of movement and sensation in the patients once a good treatment and medicinal regime are established.

The medications must include pain relievers so that the patient is not in constant pain because of his/her condition. Such pain relievers such as Oxycontin and con zip. The medications should also include anti-seizure medicines such as gabapentin. But these medicines have certain side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness.

The treatment can also include exercising and physiotherapy. Another treatment known as Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation or TENS can be used to cure this disease. The electric rods can be placed under the skin and an electric current of very low voltage can be discharged in the body for treating Peripheral Neuropathy.
