The mission of the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel served as a cooperative partnership between the public and private sectors to achieve a widely accepted set of standards to enable widespread interoperability among healthcare software applications, as they will interact in local and regional health information exchanges and in the Nationwide Health Information Network for the for the United States. HITSP harmonized standards for specific priorities, described in "Use Cases," identified in AHIC recommendations that the Secretary has adopted, or for other industry consensus processes. HITSP worked to ensure that standards met existing health needs, ensured specific guidance exists to unambiguously implement the harmonized standards, and fostered the availability and use of health IT standards nationally.
Funded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), HITSP was facilitated by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in cooperation with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).
PHDSC strongly supported HITSP. PHDSC leadership participates in the HITSP Board and HITSP Technical Committees.
