Health Information Technology Standards Committee

The Health Information Technology (HIT) Standards Committee is a federal advisory committee (FACA) charged with making recommendations to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) on standards, implementation specifications, and certification criteria for the electronic exchange and use of health information.

The Health IT Standards Committee focuses on the policies developed by the Health IT Policy Committee's initial eight areas. The Health IT Standards Committee developed a schedule for the assessment of policy recommendations developed by the Health IT Policy Committee, to be updated annually. In developing, harmonizing, or recognizing standards and implementation specifications, the Health IT Standards Committee also provides for the testing of the same by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST).

Seven HIT Standards Committee workgroups have been formed as sub-committees to the parent FACA. These workgroups meet periodically to discuss their topics, present their findings at HIT Standards Committee meetings, and make recommendations to the HIT Standards Committee.

The HIT Standards Committee workgroups are:

  • Clinical Operations
  • Clinical Quality
  • Consumer/Patient Engagement Power Team
  • Nationwide Health Information Network Power Team
  • Privacy & Security
  • Implementation
  • Vocabulary Task Force
